Fashion Line

Theme and Client

One of the first things we were asked to do in this class was come up with an idea of who we wanted to sell to, and for what season.  They wanted us to get very specific, so that our line would be as cohesive as possible.  This turned out to be quite a challenge for me.  When costuming a show, I go through a very specific process; research the period, read about the character (economic status, job, any quirks. etc.), figure out the time of year and the location, then start designing accordingly.  So creating the character of a modern day woman out of thin air was tough.

I started searching through magazines for inspiration.  I was looking for anything that struck my fancy... be it colors, fashions, people... ANYTHING!  Finally I found the pictures below in a National Geographic.  I fell in love with the colors and the kind of branchy, viney feel they had.  This at least inspired a time of year... Fall.  This was my launching  point.

From there, I starting thinking of an Elfish theme.  (Not like Christmas elves, but like the Lord of the Rings kind.)  I remembered a leather mask I'd made a few months ago that used those same colors...

But how would this all tie into a real person and stay away from being too costumey?  That was my next challenge.  Admittedly, my first sketches were a bit too quirky, but they quickly evolved into something that I think real people would wear.  More pictures to come soon!
